Have you noticed the desire for indoor plants for your furry pet? How often did you make him try to thoroughly gnaw the leaves of your favorite flower? Did the cats pay attention to the pleasure of laying on grass when they live in a private house or when they are taken out to the country?
If the answer to the previous questions is yes, then you must have wondered why cats love grass so much. After all, our domestic purps are predators by nature, so why sometimes it seems that a bunch of ordinary grass attracts them more than fresh meat?
At the moment, it is not known for certain what causes cats to eat grass. But assumptions about the causes of this behavior – more than enough. Let’s try to figure them out.
Why do cats eat grass?
Because they need to supplement their diet. The most natural food for cats is meat, but it cannot contain all the necessary nutrients and vitamins. Therefore, cats eat grass to get what they lack. In particular, there is vitamin B9 in the grass, also known as folic acid. This vitamin helps increase the level of oxygen in the blood and the normal growth of the animal. Its presence is especially important for pregnant cats.
At the same time, there is an opinion that the body of cats is able to independently produce the substances it lacks. Therefore, cats do not need to absorb grass. In addition, if cats needed vitamins, they would eat different herbs – because one contains some substances, the other contains others. And the cats, it seems, do not care what grass is. So, it is possible that supplementing the diet is not a reason for cats to eat grass.
Because they like her taste.
It is believed that some cats bite the grass not even to swallow it, but only to feel the juices released from the stems and leaves of the plants. How to prove and disprove this version is currently impossible.
Because they need to cleanse their body. This version seems most plausible. Indeed, in the wild, cats, as predators, get their food through hunting. And after they caught a mouse or some other small animal, of course, they eat it whole, without separating the meat from the bones. Because of this, unnecessary elements – the same bones – get into the cat’s body. In order to get rid of them, the cat eats grass, which, when it enters the stomach, “binds” undigested food elements and causes the cat to vomit, thanks to which she gets rid of all the excess in the stomach.
Yes, when kept in an apartment, your cat has practically no chance of hunting and eating mice and birds. But even if you control her diet and do not give her fish, in which bones could also be caught, you can still notice that the cat sometimes eats grass. She does this for the same reason – to empty her stomach. After all, in the end, nothing prevents her from eating a piece of sausage that has fallen from the table and rolled into a corner, which caused a negative reaction in the body?
In addition, do not forget about the cleanliness of cats. They spend a substantial part of the time in the endless licks of their fur. The hair clings to the rough tongue of the cat and enters the stomach, where it should not be digested, but accumulated in the form of a coma. Of course, this cannot lead to anything good. Eating grass and vomiting caused by this allows you to get rid of hairs that have fallen into the cat’s stomach.
Therefore, eating grass is absolutely essential for cats’ health, and they should not be forbidden to do so. However, it should be remembered that there are plants that do not bring animals absolutely any benefit, and some of them may even be poisonous to them. To prevent this cat’s habit from harming the cat’s body, its owners need to know which plants are best not to have in the house, and which, on the contrary, can even be specially planted.
What grass is good for cats?
As a rule, cats are able to independently choose the most attractive grass for them. If you have the opportunity to take your pet to the country in the summer, then you will notice that he is happy to absorb the freshest and youngest grass that he can find. And, of course, he is unlikely to be seduced by dirty, dusty, and withered grass.
Cats usually prefer grasses and sedge. However, this does not mean that with home maintenance they should be deprived of it. Even if you keep your pet in the apartment, you can still ensure that he has tasty and healthy grass right on the windowsill. One of the plants most loved by cats, for example, is mint, which has a pleasant aroma for them.
Dangerous for cats plants
Some plants are harmful and even dangerous to the health of cats, and therefore they must be avoided. The list is quite extensive and includes the following plants:
- Tree of life;
Lily of the valley;
- As well as all bulb plants.
So, we found out that eating grass for cats (if it is not included in the list above) is not only not harmful, but even useful. You can independently grow oats and other herbs useful and loved by cats in an apartment, and this will not only please your pet, but also protect your indoor plants from its teeth. And if you find your cat behind an empty stomach, in no case do not scold her: she does not control this useful, but unpleasant process. Better just temporarily place it in the bathroom, where she just can not stain furniture and other interior items.
